We've just released version 3.0 of PublishPress Blocks. This update has a new interface that closely matches the other PublishPress plugins. This update also introduces the foundations of more key improvements in future releases, particularly around the “Block Controls” features.

I'll give you a quick guide to the changes you see when you install the new version of PublishPress Blocks.

How to Disable the Gutenberg Block Editor

Disable Gutenberg Header

The Gutenberg editor provokes a lot of debate in the WordPress world. Some people love Gutenberg – we're in that camp and built the PublishPress Blocks plugin. Some people really don't like Gutenberg and prefer to stick with the editor they've used for years.

However, most WordPress users have more mixed feelings and prefer to switch back-and-forth depending on the project. We've had several questions from PublishPress customers who want to know how to disable Gutenberg in some situations, or for some users.

In this guide, we share several different ways you can disable Gutenberg. Each option has its own methods for switching between Gutenberg and the older, classic editor.

If I had to pick a word to describe my experience with large WordPress sites, it's “overwhelming”.

There are so many admin notices, plugin alerts, review requests, and other demands for your attention. In the post editor, and particularly in Gutenberg, there are a ton of sidebar, tabs, settings, metaboxes, and configuration options.

PublishPress 2021 Review and Thank You

2021 Review

In 2018, we launched PublishPress.com as a side-project. In 2019, PublishPress was growing quickly and we began to see it as a project with real potential. So at the end of that year, we started to write year-end reviews. You can read previous reviews for 2019 and 2020.

  • These reviews are for our customers. Thank you for all your investment in our work. I hope the reviews help you get a better understanding of our vision for these plugins.
  • The reviews are for business owners. We try to be honest about the ups-and-downs in the hope that you can avoid some of the mistakes we've made!
  • And finally, the reviews are for us. We pour many hours of our lives into building these plugins. It's easy to forget key incidents as you do the daily work. And as the years go by, it's great to look back on these reviews and remember the rollercoaster ride.

Here's our recap of key events for PublishPress in 2021.

Clean Up the WordPress Admin Area With PublishPress Capabilities

23 Caps Header

One thing we often hear from new WordPress users is that the interface is noisy. Especially once you have a few plugins installed, it's easy for the admin area to become overwhelmed with notifications, messages, links, alerts, and widgets.

PublishPress Capabilities 2.3 is available now, and it has a new screen called “Admin Features” which help you clean up the admin area.

In this first release, “Admin Features” allows you to control access to two key features:

  • Admin toolbar
  • Dashboard widgets

This image below shows you where those two features are in the WordPress admin area:

Block Access Allows You to Control Blocks for User Roles

Block Access

“Block Access” is one of the most popular features in the PublishPress Blocks plugin. This feature allows you to control which blocks are available to different user roles.

For example, if you want to prevent some user roles from adding “Table” blocks, you can block them from doing that with this feature.

In version 2.10 of Blocks, we've simplified the “Block Access” feature. The system is now based on user roles and is very similar to the PublishPress Capabilities plugin.

  • To get started, go to “Blocks”, then “Block Access”.
  • In the top-left corner, you can choose the user role you want to edit.
