PublishPress Revisions 4.3.1: Smarter Revision Workflows and Duplicate Permissions

This post is about a release of the PublishPress Revisions plugin. This plugin allows you safely manage changes to published posts in WordPress. You can approve all changes to posts and even schedule them to go live on a specific day.

PublishPress Revisions 4.3.1 makes revision management smoother for editorial teams. The biggest new option can send users back to their existing unsubmitted revision instead of creating another one, which helps prevent duplicate drafts and review confusion.

Revision review improvements

  • Return to an existing revision: When enabled, clicking Create Revision takes a user to their current unsubmitted revision instead of making another copy.
  • Collapsible comparison sidebar: The Visual Compare sidebar can now be collapsed, giving you more room to review changes.
  • Clearer block details: Visual Compare now formats block change descriptions in a way that is easier to scan.
  • Better update message: The Draft saved message after a revision update has been adjusted to better reflect the action. The message now says “Revision updated”

Other fixes and security updates

This release also includes important security and reliability fixes, especially around who can publish reviewed content and who can see unpublished posts.

  • Better Duplicate permissions: Site managers can require a dedicated permission before someone duplicates content. That setting is called “Post Duplication requires role capability”. Admins can manage that access through PublishPress Capabilities.
Better Duplicate permissions
  • Clearer settings guidance: Permission settings now show a clearer path to manage or install PublishPress Capabilities when extra permission control is needed.
  • Security fixes: The update closes gaps that could let contributors publish unreviewed content or let lower permission users view unpublished posts they should not see.
  • Scheduled publishing reliability: Background publishing tasks are more dependable, including on sites that use an external scheduling service.
  • Safer page restores: A restored page revision can no longer accidentally set the page as its own parent.
  • Correct Edit links: Revisor users should no longer see Edit links when their account does not have edit access.
  • Consistent Duplicate wording: Remaining Copy labels have been renamed Duplicate.

Before you update

This release now requires PHP 8.2. If you are not sure what your site uses, check your hosting control panel or ask your host before updating, especially on older WordPress installations.
