PublishPress Permissions v4.8.3: Control Role Level Editing from User Management
This post is about a release of PublishPress Permissions. This plugin to allows you to control who can view and edit your WordPress content. You can give very specific access to individual posts, tags, categories, and more.
PublishPress Permissions v4.8.3 is a maintenance release with one especially useful control for site managers: you can now turn role level editing restrictions in User Management on or off as needed. That gives teams more flexibility when delegating user administration, while this update also improves counts, searches, menus, and compatibility fixes across the plugin.

User Management restrictions
The User Management setting now includes an enable or disable option for role level restrictions. When enabled, lower level users with permission to edit users can be prevented from editing, viewing, or assigning roles beyond the level you allow.
In your WordPress admin area, go to Permissions > Settings > Advanced and find “User Management”. Read more about this feature.
More accurate counts and filtered screens
Several fixes focus on showing users only the information they should see, and showing counts that match the actual filtered results.
- Attachment taxonomy counts: Media related taxonomies now count attachments stored with the inherited status, so folders and similar views show accurate totals.
- Contributor post totals: Restricted users no longer see site wide post totals when their post list is filtered by permissions.
- Status and pagination counts: Post list counts now line up with the filtered results users can actually access.
Other fixes and polish
- Quick search: Search continues to work after moving through paginated item selection lists.
- Category exceptions: Existing category exceptions no longer appear as “No setting” in tabbed permission metaboxes.
- Navigation menus: Parent menu corrections are saved correctly, including on sites using persistent object caching.
- MultilingualPress compatibility: Editing restrictions no longer block some Posts unexpectedly when MultilingualPress is active.
- WordPress interface compatibility: Teaser table radio buttons no longer render as broken crescent shaped controls in WordPress 7.0.
- Content Security Policy support: The script that hides empty menus has been adjusted to avoid CSP issues.
Developer improvements
- Cache handling: The plugin now avoids unnecessary full WordPress cache flushes.
- Menu item metadata: Navigation menu parent corrections now use update_post_meta(), improving cache invalidation behavior with persistent object caches.
- Release workflows: Plugin configuration handling and changelog synchronization workflows were improved for more reliable release information.
