Venezuela’s Free Press Runs on WordPress

This is a really interesting article on the free press in Venezuela: “Collaboration helps keep independent journalism alive in Venezuela“.

Almost all the independent news outlets trying to report on the government use WordPress including El Pitazo, Efecto Cocuyo, Runrun.es, Cazadores de Fake News, and TalCual.

These websites covered the recent Venezuelan elections despite a fierce crackdown from the government. The coverage included more than 70 independent journalists within the country and 18 correspondents scattered internationally.

It's incredibly difficult to do this coverage. More than half of Venezuela's 24 states don’t have any independent news outlets. The ones that still exist are often blocked by the government, resulting in widespread use of VPNs. They are in a similar situation to elPeriódico is a daily newspaper in Guatemala.

It's great to see that WordPress is trusted as independent platform that these journalists can trust.
