PublishPress Series 3.1.5: Easier Search, Ordering, and Layout Controls

This post is about a release of the PublishPress Series plugin. This plugin allows you to organize WordPress posts into issues or series. This is ideal for anyone who writes multiple posts on the same topic.

PublishPress Series v3.1.5 adds practical tools for managing larger series, especially on sites with long-running podcasts, courses, magazines, or serialized content. The Series Order screen now has search, filtering, pagination, and one-click ordering tools, so you can find and organize entries without manually working through every post.

Feature highlights

The biggest improvement is on the Series Order screen. If a series has dozens or hundreds of posts, you can now search for a post, filter by part number, and move through results with pagination instead of being limited by a single long list.

PublishPress Series also adds Order Tools for common sorting jobs. You can order posts by publication date, choosing either oldest first or newest first, which is especially useful when turning an existing archive into a structured series.

  • Search and pagination: Manage very large series without losing posts that are beyond the first page.
  • Part number filtering: Find numbered or unnumbered entries more quickly when cleaning up a series.
  • Date-based ordering: Reorder by publication date from oldest to newest or newest to oldest.
Series Order screen improvements

For front-end presentation, Post Details now has separate controls for top, right, bottom, and left padding and margin. This gives you more precise spacing control without custom CSS for simple layout adjustments.

Other improvements and fixes

This release also improves compatibility with table of contents plugins. Series boxes are now added later in the content flow, which helps prevent Series headings from being included in automatic tables of contents or from appearing in the wrong place inside a Post List Box.

Plus, editing a Series is quicker too. The Series Categories panel now includes a search box, making it easier to find the right category on sites with lots of Series Categories.

The Post Details archive option has also been renamed to “Hide on archive screens” with clearer explanatory text, so it is easier to understand what the setting changes.

Important: PublishPress Series now requires PHP 8.2 or newer, so confirm your hosting environment before updating if you manage older WordPress installations.

  • Correct Post List Boxes: Posts that belong to more than one series now show the right series title and link in each box.
  • Post status updates: Series post counts and part numbers now update when posts are published, unpublished, or trashed.
  • Widget options: The Series widget Include and Exclude settings now work correctly.
  • Multisite safety: Only Super Admins can change the “Delete all PublishPress Series data” setting, and the setting now applies across the whole network.
  • Uninstall cleanup: Deleting the plugin now removes Series data when the delete-data setting is enabled.
  • Settings reliability: Settings updates made by code no longer fail with a “The link you followed has expired” message.
  • Accessibility: Admin fields, links, images, date controls, and Series featured images have improved labels and alternative text.
  • Security hardening: License requests now verify TLS certificates, with additional hardening for cache keys and output escaping.

Developer improvements

  • Content filter timing: Content added by other plugins at priorities 13 through 10050 now appears above a Series box placed at the bottom of a post.
  • Multisite provisioning: Series is now set up automatically on new multisite sites.
  • Admin and options cleanup: The plugin now uses admin_url() for admin links and sets option autoload values more explicitly.
  • Dependency and build updates: The release updates axios, follow-redirects, source-map-js, postcss-selector-parser, and publishpress/pimple-pimple, and fixes clean JavaScript builds.
  • Release packaging: A new workflow can build the plugin ZIP from any branch or pull request.
