PublishPress Acquires the Press Permit Plugins

We’re delighted to announce that PublishPress has acquired Press Permit.

We have been talking about working together since early 2018. Yes, the companies do have very similar names, but there's more to it than that!

Both Press Permit and PublishPress are known for developing WordPress plugins that focus on publishing.

As a combined force, our aim is to create a set of powerful publishing tools that are useful to larger organizations, magazines and newspapers.

This is a market that the WordPress community wants to target:

  • Automattic is creating the Newspack CMS to power local journalism.
  • With Stage 3 of Gutenberg, the WordPress team are aiming to build collaborative editing in the style of Google Docs

With the new PublishPress / Press Permit team, we aim to build out a suite of tools to help WordPress reach this audience.

Details of the acquisition

Most importantly, Kevin Behrens, the developer of the Press Permit plugins, is joining the PublishPress team.

The most popular plugin included in this deal is Capability Manager Enhanced, a permissions plugin with over 70,000 active installs.

Also in the deal is Revisionary, the plugin for managing, scheduling and moderating WordPress post revisions.

One of the most important parts of the acquisition is Press Permit, a very useful plugin for controlling WordPress roles and permissions. Press Permit can be enhanced with 10 premium extensions:

  • PP Circles: Control access to content not authored by other group members.
  • PP Collaborative Editing: Set publishing permissions in almost any way you can imagine!
  • PP Compatibility: Integrate your customized content permissions with bbPress, Yoast SEO and many other plugins.
  • PP Content Teaser: Replace non-readable content with your own custom message.
  • PP Custom Post Statuses: Create your own custom statuses for privacy. You can also create different statuses for moderation workflows.
  • PP File URL Filter: Control access to files, based on whether the user has access to content that contains those files.
  • PP For WPML: Control access to content based on language.
  • PP BuddyPress Role Groups: Control access to content based on BuddyPress groups.
  • PP Membership: Automatically expire user permissions after a certain time.
  • PP Custom Access Indicators: Create your own “Access Denied” error messages.

When you add these features to those already available at PublishPress.com, you have a suite of powerful publishing tools for WordPress users.

How will PublishPress users be impacted?

We hope that the vast majority of the coming changes will be positive for everyone currently using PublishPress and Press Permit.

All PublishPress users will be grandfathered in at their current subscription prices.

Over the next few weeks, the Press Permit extensions will be updated and moved to PublishPress.com.

These changes are already underway. We've already released an update for Revisionary. In the next few weeks, Revisionary will support Gutenberg. Soon afterwards, look for a new plugin, “Revisionary Pro”, which will expand on the revision management features of Revisionary.

After that, look for more updates to all the other Press Permit plugins.

We welcome you to join us as we build powerful publishing tools for WordPress users.

  1. Exciting news! Wish you all good luck! I love seeing WordPress related companies and people get together to build something even bigger!

  2. This is indeed exciting! All my sites are down or should I say, no users have access to edit. I can’t find the email from PP about the other PP going down or out. I can’t even remember which PP is which sometimes when I’m reading information that is still available online regarding each.

I need to get my users back in the saddle.

  3. Steve, existing Pro users need to register a publishpress.com account and download PressPermit Pro. It’s now a single plugin which replaces Press Permit Core / PressPermit, where before I released multiple PP extension plugins that interfaced with Press Permit Core.

Since you’re a current Pro member, we’ll help you through the transition at no additional cost.
